An Open Letter to Luke Esser [Washington State GOP Chair]

thomas-esser50.jpgFrom Brian Thomas:
Chairman Esser,
The news media has been reporting protests from Mike Huckabee’s campaign manager of your calling the results of Saturday’s caucuses for John McCain prior to the final count.
I’m even more confident now,” Esser said. “These latest batch of results confirms what I said last night. It’s a close race, but it’s clear Sen. McCain will win the Washington state precinct caucuses. ”
MY WAY February 11, 2008.
will win “?
As Chairman of the Washington State Republican Party it is not your position to be ” even more confident now ” that your candidate ” will win ” , it is your responsibility to be accurate and fair in making statements concerning the Washington State Republican Party.
Although John McCain may become the numerical winner in the delegate count to the district and county conventions, to state that as a fact prior to the final delegate count is neither accurate nor fair.
I believe your pronouncement was intended to give momentum to the McCain campaign in deference to ardent McCain supporter Rob McKenna, titular head of the Washington State Republican Party by nature of his position as Washington State Attorney General, and the Liberal leadership of the Washington State Republican Party.
The Huckabee campaign has reason to be concerned about the accuracy and honesty of your pronouncement.
The Washington State Republican Party has a history of slander, intimidation and violence against Conservatives (and those ‘too Christian’) in the Washington State Republican Party and when that fails and they run for public office as a Republican, the Liberal leadership of the Washington State Republican Party has used party apparatus to deny Conservatives (and those ‘too Christian’) their right to resources and support of the Washington State Republican Party, giving de facto support to Liberal Democrat candidates.
The Huckabee campaign has reason to be concerned.
As a Republican, a Republican Precinct Committee Officer, a Republican candidate for County and State Office, and a Mitt Romney delegate, I formally request that you withdraw your statement that Rob McKenna’s candidate John McCain was the “winner” of the GOP caucuses until which time that is actually established.  And I request you do  respond to questions about actions by the Washington State Republican Party leadership in the running of the caucuses and be open and honest with the Huckabee campaign in their attempt to determine what actually transpired during the caucus delegate count.
In the best interests of the Washington State Republican Party,

  1. Brian,

Great story, Esser is part of the State Gop establishment
crowd. This is a guy who has all of his eggs in the Dino
Rossi basket. Since Dino is apparently having trouble
raising money at the moment, its not a good place for
Esser to be. As of today the State Gop has not raised a
dime so far in 2008. In short they are in big trouble and
there’s only one way out. Can you say MARK HULST.
As Mark predicted this party has become a train wreck.

  2. This has gotten to silly proportions! The poll that Esser is reporting is only a STRAW POLL of delegates to the county convention. It is not binding or official. We are not electing Presidential delegates. You and the press are conveniently leaving that important fact out… in order to gin up the support for your accusations.
It is true that Luke probably should begin and end each and every sentence regarding these results with ‘this is a straw poll and not binding or official.’ The state party did not count up these results. The individual county chairs and our volunteers did this. Some have not turned in their counts yet. And many of us do not necessarily feel great about McCain, but we made an agreement to provide this information for the buzz hungry press. Many of us are Romney, Huckabee and die hard Fred heads and since we made the counts- it seems you are making these accusations to us! What are you going to whine about in 9 days when the ballots are counted? Who do you think the candidate will be? Will your actions support republicans or to make a difference within the party?
Stop making accusations for absolutely nothing. Use your energy to get elected to the state committee and make a difference. Or run for office and go to Olympia to change the state. That would count for something.

  3. “It is true that Luke probably should begin and end each and every sentence regarding these results with ‘this is a straw poll and not binding or official.”

That’s not necessary. But it would have helped if he just prefaced the press release that “Sen. McCain Wins Republican Precinct Caucuses in Washington State.” Or better yet, announced no winner at all! Instead, it looks as if he was manufacturing some “momentum” for McCain.

And please! We are aware of the difference between straw polls and delegate counts. And we are aware that no national delegates have been chosen yet.

And Fred Heads? Fred wants you to close ranks around McCain. Romney dropped out “for the good of his party” and is deferring to McCain. Huckabee looks like he’s still running to be McCain’s Veep, this facade of a fight aside.

  4. Terry (at 2), you write from the point of view of someone who is a County Chair (“The individual county chairs and our volunteers did this”), yet with some incorrect assumptions. It sounds to me like you have been victimized by your own, trusting nature.

First, you say this is “only a STRAW POLL” as if that, somehow lessens the severety of Esser’s actions. To the contrary, for Luke to give the entire nation the impression that McCain has won Washington’s nomination delegates when the truth is much different makes his actions WORSE, not less significant. And there is no doubt that Esser did it, specifically to help McCain win the nomination. The tracks in the sand are too long and deep. Far from “ginning up support for” any accusations, the ommission of these facts actually was merciful to Esser.

It is unfortunate that a County Chair (if, in fact, you are one) does not, yet, know that his entire State Party Machine has been in the tank for McCain for many years. Failure to make that assessment makes you more vulnerable to deception.
McCain’s leverage was accomplished on the issue of Illegal Immigration. Esser, McKenna, Simpson, Kent and all their close allies are in favor of the McCain/Kennedy/RNC/Bush/Mexican Government-sponsored Comprehensive Amnesty proposal on which they have all collaborated for years, as were Luke’s predecessors in the State Chair position throughout this decade. They have attempted to slip it past the American public by dissimulation and leveraging mid-level leadership like yourself.

Esser says, “I’m neutral!” and you believe him. David Boze believes him. Everyone wants to believe him. It is impolite to think your own State Chair is a liar.

But on Feburary 19th the overwhelming majority of Democrat voters will, for the first time in history, have a free pass to choose who gets the majority of Washington State Republican Delegates to the National Convention. The Democrats and Independents who in November will be voting for Obama or Hillary, who in other Democrat States have crossed over to put Senator McAmnesty over the top of the Repbulican base, will, next Tuesday, control the Washington Republican Party for only one reason: the hard work of Luke Esser.
Esser worked the State Committee long and hard for the rules changes that throw the delegate selection to a Primary that means nothing on the Democrat side, but everything on the Republican side. Democrats will do the predictable thing, cross over, and award their favorite Republican our delegates. Some have already announced it.
Esser knows that John McCain is the overwhelming choice of Democrats. Why not? His nomination means a Democrat in the White House just as McGavick’s nomination meant a Democrat in a Washington State Senate seat.

Second, Why would anyone make “an agreement to provide this information for the buzz hungry press” unless they felt the interests of the Mainstream McAmnesty McCain Media, his “non-partisan” collaborators, outweighed the interests of the Republican Party?

Third, Brian made no accusations of anyone who did any counting. If you feel defensive it’s probably because you trusted Esser.

Fourth, you ask, “What are you going to whine about in 9 days when the ballots are counted?” Well, I don’t know about Brian, but I’m going to be shouting about how Luke Esser sold the interests of the Washington State Republican Party to Democrats, which, by that time will be irrefutable. And if you think what we’re about to unleash is “whining,” you probably thought the whole career of Ronald Reagan was just “whining” about the Soviet Union.

Fifth, you tell Brian to “Stop making accusations for absolutely nothing,” and ask if he is working to “make a difference in the Party” and then tell him to “Use your energy to get elected to the state committee and make a difference. Or run for office and go to Olympia to change the state. That would count for something.”

You betray a serious lack of knowledge of recent Repbublican history.

Brian Thomas has fought a long battle against the worst kind of corruption in the Republican Party, against left-wing subversive, lawbreaking slanderers who have leadership positions in the Party that they won by deception and keep by fraud. He’s done it for many years at great personal cost. He has done, literally, everything you suggest and then some. Your assumption to the contrary is a serious mistake.

If we do not rid ourselves of corrupt, subversive Republican leadership we will sink as a nation. If well-meaning leaders such as yourself insist on remaining naïve, we will never replace that leadership.

  5. “…ONLY A STRAW POLL”

This reminds me of my son’s experience in a class at EWU. The professor used swear words in every sentence. When my son confronted & objected, he replied, “they are ONLY WORDS”. It’s easy to minimize effects when your actions are questionable.

  6. I will not point fingers….but my point was that Words mean something just like Votes mean something….straw or otherwise.

After the 2004 fiasco in this state, we need to be very careful that we don’t jump ahead of final counts.

It’s not over…til it’s over! As in….Truman vs Dewey….Boise State vs Oklahoma, etc.

  7. #2 Terry and et al.

Getting back to the point, it is not the position of Luke Esser as Chairman of the Washington State Republican Party to be making pronouncements as to ‘winners’, and therefore also the ‘losers’, in any poll, primary and/or election until after all the delegates/votes are accurately counted.

Each time I listen to and/or read Luke Esser’s attempt to justify his early pronouncement of John McCain’s ‘winning’ the caucuses it becomes clearer that Luke Esser’s pronouncement was meant to give momentum to the McCain campaign before the Super Tuesday primary and to satisfy the likes of Rob McKenna and the Liberal leadership of the Washington State Republican Party who are looking for a job in a McCain administration.

Luke Esser’s job is to represent all the Republicans in the State of Washington, the majority of which are conservative and grassroots, not be a shill for the Liberal leadership of the Washington State Republican Party.
